Out and About in Oldham

THE NEED

Listening to the needs of our LGBT community is paramount and we are completely committed to creating a safe and inclusive space that welcomes diversity and supports everyone. Older lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people want all of the same things in later life as heterosexual older people. This includes staying in their own homes for as long as possible and being treated with respect and dignity when they access health and care services.

THE SOLUTION

Our Out and About group provides a safe and supportive group setting for people to get together regularly for meetings and social events to enjoy friendship and lots of laughter. Led by Age UK Oldham, members are very much encouraged to set the agenda for themselves and t support each other. The group also regularly arrange additional events which have included picnics, walks, meals out and visits to regional gay nights and events.

THE BENEFITS

As well as regular meetings for members, the group hosts lots of fun events for all. For example, to mark the 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality on 14 July 2017, Out and About organised a group walk in Dunwood Park, Shaw, providing food and festivities for everyone in the community to come and share.

THE LEARNING

Because the group encouraged people from other communities to join the event, lots of non LGBT people made new LGBT friends.

LOOKING AHEAD

Thanks to the success of the event in Dunmore Park, more get-togethers are going to be planned soon – everyone is welcome.
