This seminar will share the research and learning from the Ageing Better in Camden (ABC) Outreach Team around engaging with older men in pubs, sheltered housing and via street outreach, to find out how older men in Camden socialise with others and what an attractive social activity would look like for them.

The Outreach Team works to locate and engage older people who are not accessing activities or support services in Camden. Their focus is on the ‘the people no-one knows’. From February 2018 to March 2019, the outreach team engaged with 1,361 older men, the vast majority of whom did not go on to attend activities with deliver partners but often demonstrated a need for social connections. They wanted to gain insight into why this was the case, and what else men wanted if they were not attracted by the offers being presented to them.

The Outreach team will share successful models of how they are applying their research to bring older men together as part of informal social hubs and opportunities.

Seminar attendees will be invited to consider the learning from our research as part of an interactive session to explore how a new approach to bringing older men together could work in practice.
